Ice makers are vital to producing fresh beverages at any eating outlet, but what pricing and feature trends do catering equipment dealers need to be aware of right now?

We are approaching one of the peak ice maker seasons of the year right now, as operators gear up for summer demand for chilled drinks. But what impact does that have on pricing for the distributors specifying these appliances, and how can they differentiate between various ice maker models?

There is a world of difference between entry level and more advanced ice machines on the market and DC Warewashing & Icemaking Systems' director Bob Wood, surmises that there has been a distinct trend in recent years in the amount of low grade ice making systems now available, usually being offered at low prices. "Lower prices can be seductive but often prove to be a false economy. Buyers should ensure that they compare like-for-like in terms of overall quality and value-for-money", he explained.

"There are significant differences in the various types of ice making machines and systems available in terms of type of ice, self-contained or modular units, volume of ice required, grade and quality of materials used in the manufacture and in energy and water consumption" Wood added.

DC's machines are made using catering grade stainless steel for strength and hygiene whilst the insulated ice-storage bin is made using anti-bacterial plastic. All materials comply with FDA regulations.
